Bushwig '22: A Cavalcade of Queens
Celebrating 11 years of America's best drag event with Tyler Ashley, Warhola Pop, Victoria Holiday, West Dakota, Anoma Lia, Amanda Lepore, Linda Simpson, Vena Cava, Qhrist Almighty and more.
Bushwig is without a doubt America’s best drag show. Held at the sprawling Knockdown Center in Queens (but it feels like you’re in Brooklyn), the event spans one weekend in September. It’s “Two days of non-stop music, drag & dancing, 150+ performers over 3 stages.” Anna Wintour has Vogue World, Horrorchata has Bushwig.
Queens are given short sets of 5-minutes to do their best work. If you pull out all the stops, you will be remembered. And while Bushwig has moved passed the accusations that they don’t pay their queens (all are given a performance fee), it is arguably the biggest stage for queens beyond Drag Race or Dragula — which is worth something.
Bushwig is an unforgiving stage — you either step your pussy up, or good luck getting invited back next year. It may sound cold, but participation trophies are not handed out in the Brooklyn/New York drag scene. People in this city have too much access to too much talent, and too little time to see it all. So by all means do you mama, but please just do it well.
Abi attended both days of Bushwig this year and snapped some photos of the queens and the guests in attendance.
